The numbers tell the story of the gameвЂ™s wild, runaway success. Down by the ferry terminal in 2016, a few nights after the New Zealand release of Pokemon Go. I can promise you, though, that if you thought PokГ©mon Go was over, you couldnвЂ™t be more wrong. You probably havenвЂ™t seen PokГ©mon Go in the news for a while, and you almost certainly havenвЂ™t seen people gather in those strange swarms like they did back in 2016. The buzz had died down by the following year, but the game has remained a core part of the PokГ©mon franchise ever since, including the release in 2018 of PokГ©mon LetвЂ™s Go Pikachu and Eevee, shinier, upgraded versions of the game designed for the Nintendo Switch. Both US presidential candidates mentioned it in their election campaigns вЂ“ вЂњPokГ©mon go to the pollsвЂќ ranks among historyвЂ™s cringiest remarks вЂ“ while the game itself caused a massive influx of visitors to national landmarks, public buildings and places of worship across the world. By the end of that month, it had generated more than US$160m in revenue through in-game purchases and microtransactions. Within a week, it had been downloaded more than 10 million times. When it launched on this very day five years ago, PokГ©mon Go became the kind of gaming phenomenon that most developers can only dream of.

The game would later add more complex, deeper mechanics that drew from the PokГ©mon series proper, including battles, trades and raids (teaming up with other players to take down a strong monster), but the core gameplay loop remained the same: You walk, you swipe, you try to catch вЂem all. That winter, New Zealand cities were full of players hunched over their phones, walking as if in a trance, while others ran by in an attempt to catch one of the 154 PokГ©mon that were then available. Such sights would become common in the months that followed. That night I quickly realised the reason for this crowdвЂ™s intense concentration: the newly released mobile game PokГ©mon Go. ItвЂ™s an oddly haunting sight a crowd of people together but alone. All around us stand people wrapped up in puffer jackets and hoodies, all looking down, their faces illuminated by the blue light from their phones. ItвЂ™s the middle of the night, the temperature sitting at a single digit. IвЂ™m standing down at the Auckland ferry terminal waiting for a boat with a friend. There is an image from about five years ago thatвЂ™s been burned into my brain.

Google has a software development kit for the Unity game engine that helps plug the Maps data into games. Google says that since indie studios and other developers have expressed interest in using the tools and the platform, they are now scaling up infrastructure to allow them to take advantage of it. Only 10 games have been built using these tools so far, according to Google. Google had first announced these Map tools in March 2018 but at that point in time they were only available to a вЂlimited groupвЂ™ of studios.
